Things to See in Dhangethi & South Ari

One small island, one extraordinary reef — and a handful of neighbours worth a boat ride.

Dhangethi itself takes an hour to explore on foot. What surrounds it would take a lifetime: the protected whale shark reef, manta cleaning stations, coral pinnacles and channels, and sandbanks that appear and disappear with the tides.

We have grouped the places into three: the island itself, the reefs and marine life, and the neighbouring islands and resorts you can reach by speedboat.

Dhangethi Village & Harbour

Sandy lanes, a boatyard and island life at its own pace

Dhangethi is a working Maldivian island of roughly 1,200 people, home to fishermen, boat builders and resort workers. Its sandy streets, little cafés, mosque, school and busy harbour are the real Maldives that resort guests rarely see — friendly, quiet and easy to explore on foot in an hour.

Dhangethi Bikini Beach

The beach where swimwear is fine

Like other inhabited islands in the Maldives, Dhangethi sets aside a tourist beach where bikinis and ordinary swimwear are accepted. It is the place for sunbathing and swimming in the lagoon; elsewhere on the island, cover shoulders and knees. Your guesthouse will point you to it.

Reefs & marine life

South Ari Marine Protected Area

One of the few places on Earth with whale sharks all year

The outer reef running along the southern rim of Ari Atoll — past Dhigurah, Dhangethi and Maamigili — is a protected area best known for juvenile whale sharks, which are seen here in every month of the year. Boats from Dhangethi reach it in minutes, and a whale shark snorkel is the reason most visitors come.

Manta Points of South Ari

Cleaning stations where mantas come to be groomed

Reef manta rays visit cleaning stations around the southern Ari reefs, the best known being Rangali Madivaru near Rangali island. Snorkel and dive boats from Dhangethi visit manta areas when conditions suit; numbers vary greatly with the monsoon and the plankton.

South Ari Dive Sites

Thilas, channels and reef sharks

South Ari is one of the Maldives’ classic dive areas: submerged pinnacles (thilas) such as Kudarah Thila and Broken Rock, channel dives with grey and whitetip reef sharks, and the whale shark reef itself. Dhangethi has a dive centre, and several guesthouses arrange dives with operators nearby.

Sandbanks & Picnic Islands

A strip of white sand in the middle of the lagoon

Few experiences are as Maldivian as being dropped on a sandbank — a bar of pure white sand with nothing but turquoise water around it. Excursions from Dhangethi combine a sandbank or an uninhabited picnic island with snorkelling, and some guesthouses arrange private drop-offs.

Nearby islands & resorts

Dhigurah

Dhangethi’s long, thin neighbour

Just south of Dhangethi along the same whale shark reef, Dhigurah is a long, narrow local island with guesthouses, a long sandbank at its tip and whale shark trips of its own. It is the obvious alternative base, and many tours collect guests from both islands.

Mahibadhoo & its Nurse Sharks

The atoll capital, and a famously sharky harbour

Mahibadhoo, north of Dhangethi, is the administrative capital of South Ari Atoll, with a hospital, banks and ferries. Snorkel trips from Dhangethi stop nearby to swim with docile nurse sharks that gather in the shallows.

Maamigili & Villa Airport

The airport island of South Ari

Maamigili, south-west of Dhangethi, is the largest island in the atoll and home to Villa International Airport (Maamigili), which links South Ari to Malé by domestic flight. Flying in and finishing by speedboat is an alternative to the long boat ride from the capital.

Resort Day Visits

Borrow a five-star island for the day

South Ari is ringed with resort islands, and some sell day passes to guesthouse guests: a transfer, lunch, drinks and access to the beach and pool. As local islands are alcohol-free, it is also the easy way to have a cocktail at sunset.

Getting around

On Dhangethi you walk. Everything else is by boat: excursions include transfers, and guesthouses can arrange private speedboats to neighbouring islands. Public ferries link some islands on certain days but are not practical for sightseeing. See getting to Dhangethi and the excursions guide.

Plan your Dhangethi trip

Book the whale sharks for day one.

Boats run with limited places and sightings are never guaranteed, so book your whale shark trip for your first full day and keep a spare day to try again. Most tours can be cancelled free of charge.
