Ari Atoll has some of the most celebrated diving in the Maldives, and the south of the atoll is no exception. The classic South Ari dive is a thila — a coral pinnacle rising from the atoll floor to a few metres below the surface — where currents bring in fish and the fish bring in predators. Kudarah Thila and Broken Rock are two well-known examples; channel and outer-reef dives add grey and whitetip reef sharks, eagle rays and turtles.
Dhangethi has a dive centre and is close to many of these sites, and several guesthouses work with dive operators on the island or nearby. Beginners can take a discover-scuba session or an open water course, and certified divers can join daily boat dives.
What to see and do: South Ari Dive Sites
Dive the thilas
Pinnacles covered in soft corals, with overhangs, swim-throughs and schooling fish. Currents can be strong, so these dives suit divers comfortable with drift diving.
Look for reef sharks
Grey reef sharks and whitetips patrol channels and reef edges. Your dive guide will choose sites and times to suit the current.
Learn to dive
An open water course takes several days and fits easily into a week’s stay. Families can find promotions such as the family course listed on GetYourGuide; compare with the local dive centre’s own prices.

How to get to South Ari Dive Sites
- All dives are boat dives, leaving from Dhangethi or from a dive centre on a neighbouring island. Bring your certification card and logbook.
Insider tips
- Leave at least 18–24 hours between your last dive and your flight home — a seaplane or domestic flight counts. Ask your dive centre for its rule.
- Check that your travel insurance covers diving to the depth you plan.
- Whale shark encounters are normally on snorkel, not on scuba.
