Since the Maldives opened its inhabited islands to guesthouse tourism, each island that welcomes visitors has set aside a beach where tourists can sunbathe and swim in ordinary swimwear. On Dhangethi, as elsewhere, this is called the bikini beach. Everywhere else on the island — in the village, the shops and the harbour — the dress code is modest.
The arrangement works well in practice. The bikini beach is a few minutes’ walk from the guesthouses, with soft sand, shallow water and views over the lagoon to the reef. You will share it mostly with other guesthouse guests; local families swim too, usually fully clothed, at other spots and at different times. Exactly where the beach is and how it is marked can change, so ask your host on arrival.
What to see and do: Dhangethi Bikini Beach
Swim and sunbathe
The lagoon is generally calm and shallow close to shore. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water; there is little natural shade on some stretches, and the equatorial sun is fierce even on cloudy days.
Snorkel from the beach
Conditions vary around the island. Ask your guesthouse where it is safe to snorkel from shore and when; currents along the outer reef can be strong, and you should never snorkel alone or near the boat channel. For the best coral and turtles, a guided snorkel trip is far more rewarding.
Watch the sunset
Late afternoon is the nicest time on the beach, when the heat fades and the sky colours over the water. Many guests bring a cold drink (soft drinks only — the island is alcohol-free) and stay until dark.
