Where to Stay on Dhangethi

Small guesthouses in the village, neighbours on Dhigurah and Maamigili, and a resort for the last night if you fancy it.

Dhangethi is a guesthouse island. There are no big hotels here — instead, a few dozen small, mostly family-run properties of a handful to a couple of dozen rooms each, scattered through the village a few minutes’ walk from the beach and the harbour.

Below we describe four options: Dhangethi itself, the neighbouring island of Dhigurah, Maamigili with its airport, and the resorts of South Ari. Each card is labelled budget, mid-range or upscale and links to Booking.com for live rates. Where we could not confirm a property’s exact Booking.com page, the link opens a Booking.com search for its name.

Guesthouses on Dhangethi are much of a muchness in location — the island is tiny — so choose on room quality, meal plan, how they handle transfers and excursions, and recent reviews.

Read the small print: Maldivian room rates are often shown before taxes. Expect a government green tax per person per night, the tourism goods and services tax (T-GST), and sometimes a service charge on top. Check whether breakfast or half board and the speedboat from Malé are included.

When to book

  • December to April is the dry, calmer season and the busiest time for guesthouses; book several weeks to a few months ahead, especially around Christmas, New Year and European holidays.
  • May to November is quieter and often cheaper. Whale sharks are still around, but plan spare days for rough seas.
  • Book the room and the speedboat together. Many hosts coordinate the boat from Malé; tell them your flight times when you book.

Practical notes

  • Meal plans: bed and breakfast, half board and full board are all common. With few restaurants on the island, half board is often the easiest choice.
  • Payment: some guesthouses take cards, others prefer US dollars in cash for extras and excursions. Ask before you go.
  • No alcohol: it applies to guesthouses too. Do not pack any — it will be confiscated at the airport.
  • Dress code: rooms are private, but in the village and in shared areas dress modestly. See the local-island guide.
  • Getting there: see getting to Dhangethi for speedboats, ferries and flights to Maamigili.

Plan your Dhangethi trip

Book the whale sharks for day one.

Boats run with limited places and sightings are never guaranteed, so book your whale shark trip for your first full day and keep a spare day to try again. Most tours can be cancelled free of charge.

Where to stay: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Which part of Dhangethi is best to stay in?

The island is so small that every guesthouse is a few minutes’ walk from the beach and harbour. Choose on reviews, room quality, meal plan and how the host handles excursions and transfers.

How much does a guesthouse on Dhangethi cost?

Very roughly US$50–200 per room per night before taxes, depending on season and standard — far less than a resort. Check live rates on Booking.com, and add the green tax, T-GST and any meal plan.

What is the Maldives green tax?

A government tax charged per guest per night, lower at guesthouses on inhabited islands than at resorts. The rate is set by the government and has changed over time; your booking should show it.

Should I stay on Dhangethi or Dhigurah?

Both sit on the same whale shark reef. Dhigurah is known for its long beach and sandbank; Dhangethi is a slightly larger village. Pick the guesthouse you like best.

Can I combine a guesthouse with a resort?

Yes, and many people do: a few nights on Dhangethi for the whale sharks and village life, then one or two nights at a South Ari resort. Arrange the transfer between them in advance.

Do guesthouses arrange airport transfers?

Most will book a seat on a shared speedboat from Malé for you, or a domestic flight plus boat via Maamigili. Send your flight details when you book.
