Three rules make a Dhangethi trip work: do the whale shark trip early, keep a spare day for the weather, and don’t overbook — the island is meant to be slow. These plans assume you arrive by speedboat on day one.
3 days: the essentials
- Day 1: morning speedboat from Malé. Settle in, walk the village and harbour, swim at the bikini beach, sunset on the waterfront. If time allows, a short turtle snorkel.
- Day 2: whale shark trip in the morning. Afternoon at the beach or on a manta snorkel.
- Day 3: spare morning — use it for a second whale shark attempt if needed, or the coral garden trip — then the afternoon boat back to Malé.
5 days: whale sharks, mantas and a sandbank
- Day 1: arrive, settle in, village walk, sunset.
- Day 2: whale shark trip; afternoon on the beach.
- Day 3: manta snorkel; evening sunset fishing with the islanders.
- Day 4: coral garden, turtles and a picnic island; lazy afternoon.
- Day 5: spare morning (second whale shark try, or the nurse sharks at Mahibadhoo), then the boat back.
Small-boat snorkelling trip from €148 Whale Shark Snorkeling Tour from Dhigurah or Dhangethi
The essential Dhangethi excursion. A speedboat takes you out along the outer reef of the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where the crew search the surface for whale sharks and put you in the water with a guide when one is found. Sightings are frequent here but never guaranteed — wild animals keep their own schedule — so it pays to book early in your stay and leave room to try again.
- Search the South Ari Marine Protected Area for whale sharks
- Snorkel with a professional guide
- Leaves from your own island
Small-boat snorkelling trip from €148 Maldives Manta Ray Snorkeling Tour from Dhigurah & Dhangethi
A two-hour outing dedicated to reef manta rays. The boat heads to a nearby manta area — often a cleaning station, where mantas circle slowly while small fish pick them clean — and you watch from the surface. As with any wildlife trip, numbers vary with season and current; ask the operator which site they are using and how recent sightings have been.
- Snorkel at a South Ari manta spot
- Experienced guide in the water
- Short boat ride from the island
Half-day speedboat snorkelling trip from €112 Dhangethi: Coral Garden & Turtle Snorkeling Trip
A gentle half-day by speedboat from Dhangethi: a stop at a coral garden, a turtle snorkel and a swim off a small picnic island with white sand and clear water. It suits families and less confident swimmers better than the open-water whale shark trip, and it is a good way to spend an afternoon after a morning search for the big animals.
- Snorkel a coral garden near Dhangethi
- Swim with sea turtles
- Time on an uninhabited picnic island
Resort day visit from €449 Dhigurah: Centara 5* Resort Day Trip with Lunch & Drinks
Local islands such as Dhangethi are alcohol-free, so a resort day is how many guesthouse guests get a cocktail by the pool. This package takes you to the five-star Centara Machchafushi resort for lunch, drinks and an afternoon on the beach. It leaves from Dhigurah; ask whether a Dhangethi pickup can be arranged.
- A day at Centara Machchafushi Island Resort & Spa
- Buffet lunch and drinks
- Beach and pool time
Half-day speedboat snorkelling trip from €148 Dhigurah & Dhangethi: Mahibadhoo Nurse Shark Snorkeling Tour
Nurse sharks gather in the shallows near Mahibadhoo, the capital island of South Ari, a short boat ride north of Dhangethi. They are placid bottom-dwellers and an easy, memorable snorkel. Do not touch or feed them, and keep your fins off the bottom; a good guide will brief you on both.
- Nurse sharks near Mahibadhoo, the atoll capital
- Clear South Ari water and reef life
- Speedboat transfers included
Short speedboat snorkelling trip from €112 Dhigurah & Dhangethi: Sea Turtle Snorkeling & Reef Safari
The shortest and cheapest of the guided trips: an hour by speedboat to a reef where turtles feed, with a guide to show you where to look. Good as a warm-up on arrival day, or as a top-up on your last morning before the boat back to Malé.
- Snorkel with sea turtles
- Colourful reef fish and corals
- Speedboat transfers from your island
7 days: the full South Ari experience
- Day 1: arrive, village walk, beach, sunset.
- Day 2: whale shark trip.
- Day 3: manta snorkel or a first dive; sunset fishing.
- Day 4: resort day — lunch, drinks and the pool.
- Day 5: nurse sharks at Mahibadhoo; afternoon visit to Dhigurah’s long beach.
- Day 6: coral garden, turtles and a sandbank, or a private sandbank picnic.
- Day 7: spare morning, then the boat back — or transfer to a South Ari resort for a final night.
Arrival and departure tips
- If your international flight lands late, spend the first night in Hulhumalé and take a morning boat.
- On departure day, aim for a boat that gets you to the airport with plenty of margin; divers should not dive within 18–24 hours of flying.
- Tell your guesthouse your flight times when you book — they coordinate the boat.
Adding a resort
A popular combination is four or five nights on Dhangethi followed by one or two nights at a resort. See where to stay for South Ari resorts.
