Getting to Dhangethi

One international airport, three ways across the water — and why your arrival time matters more than you think.

Every trip to Dhangethi starts at Velana International Airport (MLE), on its own island next to the capital, Malé. From there it is about 88 kilometres south-west across open sea to South Ari Atoll. There is no bridge and no road — only boats and, for part of the way, planes.

Option 1: shared speedboat (most popular)

Scheduled shared speedboats run between the airport or Malé and the local islands of South Ari, usually calling at several islands along the way. The crossing takes roughly an hour and a half to two hours, depending on the boat, the number of stops and the sea. Seats are normally booked through your guesthouse, which will meet you at the jetty on Dhangethi.

  • Timetables: there are usually a few departures a day, but times and days change seasonally and some services do not run on Fridays. Ask your host for the current schedule before you book flights.
  • Price: a fixed fare per person each way, set by the boat company. It is far cheaper than a resort seaplane but noticeably more than the public ferry; confirm the current fare with your guesthouse.
  • Luggage: bags travel on deck or in the cabin and can get splashed. Pack electronics in a dry bag.
  • Seasickness: the crossing can be bumpy in the south-west monsoon (roughly May–November). Take tablets before you board if you are prone to it.

Option 2: public ferry (cheapest, slowest)

The government ferry network links Malé with the atolls on certain days of the week. The fare is very low, but the boats are slow, may require a change at the atoll capital Mahibadhoo, and the journey can take most of a day. It suits travellers with time to spare and light luggage. Schedules change, so check them shortly before you travel and ask your guesthouse.

Option 3: domestic flight to Maamigili + speedboat

Villa International Airport on Maamigili, the airport island of South Ari, has domestic flights from Velana. From Maamigili a short speedboat ride takes you to Dhangethi. This is the most comfortable option when the sea is rough and can be the fastest in total, but it costs more, involves two transfers, and domestic baggage allowances may be lower than your international ticket.

Timing your arrival

This is the most important practical point. Shared speedboats run in daylight and the last boat of the day leaves in the afternoon. If your flight lands in the evening or at night, you will probably need to spend the night in Hulhumalé (the town next to the airport) or Malé and take a boat the next morning. The same applies on departure: plan to reach the airport with plenty of margin, and for very early flights consider spending your last night near the airport.

Have a spare half-day near the airport? Short trips from Hulhumalé and Malé — a nurse shark and sandbank snorkel, a stingray reef day or a dolphin cruise — make good use of it. See the trips below.

Arriving at Velana

  • Most nationalities receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival with a valid passport, onward ticket and accommodation booking. You must also complete the online traveller declaration (IMUGA) before arrival and departure. Check the latest rules for your passport.
  • Do not bring alcohol, pork products, pornography or religious material for distribution; they are prohibited imports.
  • Speedboat counters and jetties are a short walk from the arrivals hall. Your guesthouse or the boat company will tell you where to meet.

Getting around on Dhangethi

You walk. The island is small, flat and sandy; guesthouses will carry your luggage from the jetty. Excursions include boat transfers, and private speedboats to neighbouring islands can be arranged through your host.

Coming from a resort or another island?

Transfers between islands in South Ari are by private speedboat or by the shared services. If you combine Dhangethi with a resort stay, arrange the transfer in advance with the resort or your guesthouse — see where to stay.

Getting to Dhangethi: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Malé to Dhangethi?

About 1.5 to 2 hours by shared speedboat. The public ferry takes much longer, often most of a day. A domestic flight to Maamigili plus a short boat ride is quicker in the air but adds connection time.

Is there a seaplane to Dhangethi?

Seaplanes serve resort islands; local islands like Dhangethi are normally reached by speedboat or ferry. If you are staying at a resort first, ask the resort about transfers.

Can I arrive at night?

Shared speedboats do not usually run at night. If you land late, plan a night in Hulhumalé or Malé, or ask your guesthouse about a private transfer — which is expensive and depends on the sea.

Do I need to book the speedboat in advance?

Yes. Ask your guesthouse to reserve your seat when you book the room, and send them your flight numbers.

How far is Dhangethi from Malé?

Roughly 88 kilometres south-west of the capital.
