Maamigili & Villa Airport

The airport island of South Ari

Maamigili is the largest and most populous island along the protected reef, a busy local island with a broad main street, shops, a large school and a deep-water harbour. It is unusual among the chain of islands for being naturally round. On its southern edge, built on reclaimed land, is Villa International Airport (Maamigili), opened in 2011, with a single runway of about 1,800 metres.

For Dhangethi visitors the airport is the main draw: a domestic flight from Malé to Maamigili, followed by a short speedboat transfer, is the fastest way to reach South Ari in poor weather or when no shared speedboat suits. It costs more than the speedboat, and luggage limits on domestic flights can be lower than on international ones.

What to see and do: Maamigili & Villa Airport

Fly in to save time

Ask your guesthouse whether they can meet you at Maamigili with a boat, and check the baggage allowance before you book the flight.

Stay on Maamigili

The island has guesthouses of its own and is the jumping-off point for resorts such as LUX* South Ari Atoll and Villa Park Sun Island nearby.

How to get to Maamigili & Villa Airport

  • Domestic flights from Velana International Airport in Malé take a short hop across the atolls. Speedboats then reach Dhangethi in a few minutes to half an hour, depending on the boat.

Insider tips

  • Flight schedules change seasonally; confirm times close to your trip.
  • Allow enough time between your international arrival and the domestic connection.

Whale Shark Snorkeling Tour from Dhigurah or Dhangethi

The essential Dhangethi excursion. A speedboat takes you out along the outer reef of the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where the crew search the surface for whale sharks and put you in the water with a guide when one is found. Sightings are frequent here but never guaranteed — wild animals keep their own schedule — so it pays to book early in your stay and leave room to try again.

Maldives Manta Ray Snorkeling Tour from Dhigurah & Dhangethi

A two-hour outing dedicated to reef manta rays. The boat heads to a nearby manta area — often a cleaning station, where mantas circle slowly while small fish pick them clean — and you watch from the surface. As with any wildlife trip, numbers vary with season and current; ask the operator which site they are using and how recent sightings have been.
