A week on Dhangethi needs more than one boat trip. Fortunately, the island is surrounded by things to do — most of them on, in or beside the water, and most bookable either online or through your guesthouse.
Sandbanks and picnic islands
Being dropped on a strip of white sand in the middle of the lagoon is the quintessential Maldives photo, and it is easy from Dhangethi. The coral garden and turtle trip includes time on a picnic island; your guesthouse can also arrange a private sandbank drop-off with a picnic. Read our sandbank guide.
Sunset fishing
Line fishing from a dhoni as the sun goes down is a Maldivian tradition, and most guesthouses can arrange it. You use simple hand lines rather than rods; the crew show you how. Catches are often grilled for dinner. It is a sociable evening and suits all ages — no experience needed.
Resort day visits
Spend a day at one of South Ari’s resort islands with lunch, drinks and the pool. The day pass to the five-star Centara resort from Dhigurah is listed on GetYourGuide; guesthouses know other current offers. See resort day visits.
Resort day visit from €449 Dhigurah: Centara 5* Resort Day Trip with Lunch & Drinks
Local islands such as Dhangethi are alcohol-free, so a resort day is how many guesthouse guests get a cocktail by the pool. This package takes you to the five-star Centara Machchafushi resort for lunch, drinks and an afternoon on the beach. It leaves from Dhigurah; ask whether a Dhangethi pickup can be arranged.
- A day at Centara Machchafushi Island Resort & Spa
- Buffet lunch and drinks
- Beach and pool time
Half-day speedboat snorkelling trip from €112 Dhangethi: Coral Garden & Turtle Snorkeling Trip
A gentle half-day by speedboat from Dhangethi: a stop at a coral garden, a turtle snorkel and a swim off a small picnic island with white sand and clear water. It suits families and less confident swimmers better than the open-water whale shark trip, and it is a good way to spend an afternoon after a morning search for the big animals.
- Snorkel a coral garden near Dhangethi
- Swim with sea turtles
- Time on an uninhabited picnic island
Half-day speedboat snorkelling trip from €148 Dhigurah & Dhangethi: Mahibadhoo Nurse Shark Snorkeling Tour
Nurse sharks gather in the shallows near Mahibadhoo, the capital island of South Ari, a short boat ride north of Dhangethi. They are placid bottom-dwellers and an easy, memorable snorkel. Do not touch or feed them, and keep your fins off the bottom; a good guide will brief you on both.
- Nurse sharks near Mahibadhoo, the atoll capital
- Clear South Ari water and reef life
- Speedboat transfers included
Short speedboat snorkelling trip from €112 Dhigurah & Dhangethi: Sea Turtle Snorkeling & Reef Safari
The shortest and cheapest of the guided trips: an hour by speedboat to a reef where turtles feed, with a guide to show you where to look. Good as a warm-up on arrival day, or as a top-up on your last morning before the boat back to Malé.
- Snorkel with sea turtles
- Colourful reef fish and corals
- Speedboat transfers from your island
Private full-day cruise (up to 12 people) from €4493 per group Maldives: Private Yacht Cruise in Marine Protected Area
A whole day on a private yacht in the South Ari Marine Protected Area, with the freedom to stay out longer, try more than one site and move away from the crowd of other boats. The price is for the whole boat, so it only makes sense for families or a group of friends sharing the cost.
- Your own boat for the day in the South Ari MPA
- Snorkel reefs and search for whale sharks and mantas
- Priced per group of up to 12
Half-day small-group snorkelling safari from €270 Dhangethi: Whale Shark & Manta Ray Snorkeling with Photos
A longer, more relaxed version of the classic trip, run from Dhangethi itself in a small group. You spend around four hours at sea looking for whale sharks and manta rays, with time on the boat between swims to learn about the local marine life — and the operator takes photographs, so you can concentrate on the swim rather than your camera.
- Half a day on the water from Dhangethi
- Whale shark search plus manta snorkelling
- Photos of your encounter
Nurse sharks at Mahibadhoo
The atoll capital, a short boat ride north, is known for the docile nurse sharks that gather nearby. The nurse shark snorkel is a highlight for many visitors.
Island hopping: Dhigurah and beyond
Dhigurah, Dhangethi’s long neighbour, is worth a visit for its beach and sandbank. Ask your guesthouse about a private speedboat, or combine it with an excursion that collects from both islands.
A private yacht day
For a group, a private boat in the Marine Protected Area gives you the freedom to try several sites, stay out longer and avoid other boats. The price is per boat, so it works best shared.
Night snorkelling and dolphin trips
Some operators on the island offer night snorkels and dolphin-spotting trips. Availability varies; ask locally.
