The Maldives sits just north of the equator, so it is hot all year: air temperatures usually range from the mid-20s to around 31 °C, and the sea stays warm enough to snorkel without a wetsuit. What changes is the wind and the rain, driven by two monsoons.
The two seasons
- North-east monsoon (Iruvai), roughly December to April: the dry season. More sunshine, calmer seas and generally good visibility. The busiest and most expensive time, especially around Christmas, New Year and Easter.
- South-west monsoon (Hulhangu), roughly May to November: the wet season. More cloud, rain showers and squalls, stronger winds and rougher crossings — but also fewer visitors and lower prices, and many days are still sunny.
The transitions — around April and November — can bring calm, glassy days. As with any weather, every year is different.
| Months | Weather | Sea | Marine life | Crowds & prices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dec–Feb | Dry, sunny, breezy | Usually calm; good visibility | Whale sharks; mantas often on the western side of the atolls | Busiest; book ahead |
| Mar–Apr | Hot, mostly dry | Often calmest of the year | Whale sharks; good all-round conditions | Busy to moderate |
| May–Jul | Wettest, squalls, windy | Rougher crossings; variable visibility | Whale sharks still seen; plankton brings mantas to other sites | Quiet; lower prices |
| Aug–Oct | Mixed sun and showers | Variable; calmer spells | Whale sharks; good diving on many days | Quiet to moderate |
| Nov | Transition | Increasingly calm | Whale sharks; changing manta sites | Getting busier |
Small-boat snorkelling trip from €148 Whale Shark Snorkeling Tour from Dhigurah or Dhangethi
The essential Dhangethi excursion. A speedboat takes you out along the outer reef of the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where the crew search the surface for whale sharks and put you in the water with a guide when one is found. Sightings are frequent here but never guaranteed — wild animals keep their own schedule — so it pays to book early in your stay and leave room to try again.
- Search the South Ari Marine Protected Area for whale sharks
- Snorkel with a professional guide
- Leaves from your own island
Small-boat snorkelling trip from €148 Maldives Manta Ray Snorkeling Tour from Dhigurah & Dhangethi
A two-hour outing dedicated to reef manta rays. The boat heads to a nearby manta area — often a cleaning station, where mantas circle slowly while small fish pick them clean — and you watch from the surface. As with any wildlife trip, numbers vary with season and current; ask the operator which site they are using and how recent sightings have been.
- Snorkel at a South Ari manta spot
- Experienced guide in the water
- Short boat ride from the island
Small-group snorkelling trip from €85 Maldives: South Ari Atoll Whale Shark Snorkeling Tour
At the time of writing this is the lowest-priced whale shark listing for South Ari on GetYourGuide. It is based on Fenfushi, an island at the southern end of the atoll, so check whether it can collect from Dhangethi before you book — otherwise it suits travellers staying further south.
- Whale shark snorkel in the Marine Protected Area
- Briefing on the animals before you swim
- Snacks and water on board
Small-group snorkelling trip from €270 Dhigurah: Whale Shark and Manta Ray Snorkeling Tour
Run from neighbouring Dhigurah, a little further south along the same whale shark reef, this four-hour trip is one of the few in South Ari that already carries reviews on GetYourGuide. Ask whether they can collect from Dhangethi; if not, it is a natural choice if you split your stay between the two islands.
- Whale sharks and manta rays in the Marine Protected Area
- Hotel pickup and a short boat ride
- Photos of your experience
Small-group stay-and-snorkel package from €628 Swim with Whale Sharks: Multi-Day Dhangethi Adventure
A packaged short stay on Dhangethi that bundles the island’s main ocean experiences — whale sharks, mantas and coral reefs — with time to slow down on the beach. Read the inclusions carefully (accommodation, meals, transfers from Malé and taxes) and compare with booking a guesthouse and trips separately.
- Several days based on Dhangethi
- Whale shark and manta ray snorkelling
- Reef snorkelling and beach time
Small-group island-hopping trip from €1231 Maldives: Swim with the Giants Multi-Day Island-Hopping
A week-long small-group trip that strings together three islands, including time in South Ari for the whale sharks and mantas. It is a good fit for solo travellers who would like company and someone else to handle the boats.
- Three islands in a week
- Boutique hotel stays
- Whale sharks, manta rays and reef snorkelling
Whale sharks: any month
The South Ari Marine Protected Area is famous precisely because whale sharks are seen here in every month. Weather affects how easy they are to spot and how comfortable the boat ride is, rather than whether they are present. Whenever you come, book your whale shark trip early in your stay.
Mantas: follow the monsoon
Manta rays follow the plankton, which the monsoon currents push to different sides of the atolls. Local operators know where they are; ask them about recent sightings when you book a manta trip.
Ramadan
During the holy month, which moves about eleven days earlier each year, islanders fast in daylight. Guesthouses continue to serve guests, but cafés may close during the day and the island is quieter. Eat and drink discreetly in public. Eid at the end of Ramadan is festive.
Our recommendation
For the best chance of calm seas and sunshine, come between January and April. For the best value and fewer people, the shoulder months around May and October–November are a good compromise — just leave extra days in your plan for weather.
