Reef manta rays are among the most graceful animals in the ocean, and the Maldives has one of the largest populations in the world. Around South Ari they gather at cleaning stations — coral heads where small wrasse pick parasites off their skin — and, at certain times, feed on plankton in the open water.
The best-known manta site in the south of the atoll is Rangali Madivaru, near the resort island of Rangali. Operators from Dhangethi and Dhigurah visit it and other manta areas when the current and season are right. Manta numbers swing with the monsoon: as a rough rule, mantas favour the western side of the atolls during the north-east monsoon (around December to April) and the eastern side during the south-west monsoon, but local guides know best where they are at any given time.
What to see and do: Manta Points of South Ari
Snorkel a manta cleaning station
At shallower stations you can watch from the surface as mantas circle and hover over the reef. Stay still and let them come to you; swimming at them makes them leave.
Dive with mantas
Certified divers can kneel on the sand near a deeper station and watch from below — a calmer and often longer encounter. Keep off the coral and stay low and still, away from the cleaning station itself.
Combine with whale sharks
Several trips look for whale sharks and mantas on the same outing. They are a good use of a single day, although each animal gets less time.

How to get to Manta Points of South Ari
- Manta trips leave from Dhangethi and Dhigurah by speedboat. Ask your operator which site they plan to visit and how long the ride is.
Insider tips
- Never touch a manta: it damages the protective mucus on their skin.
- Flash photography is discouraged; use natural light.
- If the operator has not seen mantas for days, ask whether a different trip would be a better use of your money.
