Dhangethi is one of the inhabited islands of Alif Dhaal — South Ari — Atoll, roughly 88 kilometres south-west of Malé and the third-largest populated island in the atoll. Around 1,200 people live here. Fishing, boat building, carpentry and handicrafts have long been the island’s trades, and today many young men work on the resort islands nearby, which makes tourism the island’s biggest earner.
For visitors that mix is the point. You stay in a small guesthouse among family homes, eat at the same cafés as the islanders and step out each morning onto sandy lanes rather than a resort boardwalk. The village is tidy, quiet and easy to understand: a harbour on one side, the school, health centre, council office and mosques in the middle, and beaches and reef all around. Most people who stay a few days end up greeting half the island by name.
What to see and do: Dhangethi Village & Harbour
Walk the island
Dhangethi is small enough to cross in a few minutes and to loop in under an hour. Start at the harbour in the morning, when the speedboats load up for excursions and fishing boats come and go, then wander the grid of sandy streets past painted houses, the school and the council secretariat. Look out for the great banyan tree, whose roots hang like curtains, and for the arched gateway on the main street.
Watch the boat builders
Boat building is one of Dhangethi’s traditional crafts, and the island has a covered boatyard where wooden hulls take shape. Be polite and ask before you take photographs or step inside a working area; if someone has time, they may tell you about the boat on the slip.
Eat like a local
Small cafés serve hedhikaa — the savoury and sweet short eats that Maldivians snack on with tea — as well as tuna curry with rice and roshi flatbread, and mas huni, a breakfast of shredded tuna, coconut, onion and chilli. Most guesthouses offer half or full board, but eating out at least once is part of the fun. Prices are low by Maldivian standards; check the menu before you order.
Sunset at the harbour wall
Locals gather along the waterfront in the late afternoon as the heat goes out of the day. Children swim off the quay, men talk over the day’s catch and the sun drops behind the reef. It is the simplest and best free entertainment on the island.
Go sunset fishing with the islanders
Most guesthouses can arrange a traditional evening fishing trip on a dhoni using hand lines — a Maldivian pastime rather than a sport-fishing charter. Whatever you catch is often grilled for dinner. See the excursions guide for what to expect.

How to get to Dhangethi Village & Harbour
- Dhangethi has no airport of its own. From Velana International Airport (MLE) near Malé, shared speedboats run to South Ari in roughly an hour and a half to two hours, depending on the boat, the weather and the number of stops. Your guesthouse will usually book a seat for you; timetables change, so confirm before you land.
- Cheaper public ferries link Malé with the atoll, but they are slow and run only on certain days. A third option is a domestic flight to Maamigili, followed by a short speedboat transfer. All three are explained on the getting-there page.
Insider tips
- Dhangethi is a Muslim community. In the village, cover shoulders and knees; swimwear belongs on the bikini beach or on excursions.
- Alcohol is not sold or permitted on local islands. Bring none in your luggage — it is confiscated at the airport.
- Friday is the main day of prayer; shops and cafés may close around midday prayers.
- There is an ATM on the island, but it may not accept every foreign card; bring US dollars in cash as a back-up.
- Ask before photographing people, especially women and children.

These top-rated experiences pair well with a visit to Dhangethi Village & Harbour:
Small-boat snorkelling trip from €148 Whale Shark Snorkeling Tour from Dhigurah or Dhangethi
The essential Dhangethi excursion. A speedboat takes you out along the outer reef of the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where the crew search the surface for whale sharks and put you in the water with a guide when one is found. Sightings are frequent here but never guaranteed — wild animals keep their own schedule — so it pays to book early in your stay and leave room to try again.
- Search the South Ari Marine Protected Area for whale sharks
- Snorkel with a professional guide
- Leaves from your own island
Half-day speedboat snorkelling trip from €112 Dhangethi: Coral Garden & Turtle Snorkeling Trip
A gentle half-day by speedboat from Dhangethi: a stop at a coral garden, a turtle snorkel and a swim off a small picnic island with white sand and clear water.
